Record Holder Trained On Tely Route

In 1975 Jerome Drayton set the Canadian Marathon record of 2:10:09 (December 7 in Fukuoka, Japan), a mark that has now stood for almost 37 years.

Two years earlier in 1973 Drayton ran 2:13:27 in the Canadian Marathon Championships right here St. John’s!  The course was an out and back following the Tely 10 route.

It was an amazing race and the half way point was The Woodstock Col.Inn.You can imagine the traffic problems for the back of the pack runners.Thanks to Joe Ryan for bringing this most historic marathon road race in Newfoundland–to a new group of readers.Yes I was pulled off the course at the 22 mile mark as darkness came.
