just wondering if you have hear any rumblings of the possibility of Track and Field events being replaced by triathalon events for the summer games which are being hosted here in cBrook next summer? Apparently plans were being made to build a running track along with a super big new soccer complex. Anyhow due to space and/or design problems with current location selected the runing track is not going to be built. Apparently a letter has been sent to goveremnt requesting that track/field be dropped from the list of sports for next years summer games. The organizing committee want to include the triathalon because Corner Brook is a triathalon city!!! Anyhow there are lots of other details but i thought this might interest you -I know you are in contact with prov. track associatin and various running clubs and was just wondering if any discussions have been had around this issue. It has been pretty low profile news simply because the sport of tra ck and field is not known here on the west coast. Stephenville is more into the sport than we are here in CBrook. there is a small running club here that has been trying to protest but I don’t think they are getting much support. Needless to say I would like to see the sport developed here. There are many young athletes who would like to have more running compettion without having to train for swimming and biking. Anyhow I thought if you could find a way to past this on to the local runniing clubs on the Avalon and Burin peninsula it might stir up some protest and help support our small local running club. It would be a shame to see the track and field events dropped from the summer games. I’m sure track/field athletes would be very upset if they were aware of this possibility.I know this has been a passion of yours -I along with others would love to see the sport grow and develop here.

As much as I love triathlon I do believe that the Summer Games should definitely involve track and field events.

As a triathlete I can say that as much as I enjoy the sport I think it would be a huge mistake for the province to allow this to happen. Track events are inexpenssive and accessible to the entire province, not just the areas with swimming pools to train in or in the case of coastal Labrador and other areas paved roads to ride on.

I realize there are alot of areas without the benefit of a track to train on but running can be done anywhere and with track events in the games it would have the benefit of encouraging our young athletes to train for them from across the province.

A track would also have long lasting benefits for the entire population of the city as a level, measured walking/running area. I believe not putting a track in the city is a huge mistake.

On a further note there is room at the new recreation complex on Wellington st if the plan was change to reduce some of the parking. The city needs to ask themselves what is more important a track for exercise or being able to drive to the soccer pitch to watch others exercise?

Give them a pair shoes, a track, and the fresh coastal air. That’s all that’s required to getting one step closer to health and fitness. Without dodging traffic. Triathlon is great but not all can swim and who pays for the expensive road bikes. Both my wife and I are triathlets, and I can say it is an expensive sport. We have two boys and we have been struggling with how to get them into the sport. They have basic mountain bikes but that won’t work in competition.
It sounds to me that someone wants to save on a track by cutting out track/field and pass the cost onto the parents with a triathlon. If Corner Brook put in a bid for the games with a track then hold them to it. Shame on them.

My name is Jonathon Slaney and I think this idea is terrible. I am from small town St.Lawrence, Burin peninsula. Here, I don’t have the facilities to train like those of larger centers, which only include half our population. That is why summer games should give an open opportunity for us small town athletes to compete in summer games.

With all due respect to the organizers … I believe that Summer Games is about participation and competition at a good level, not just competition. What I mean is that Triathlon would enclose a total of what? very few athletes… where as Track and feild is comprised of over 10 different events, for various age groups with 10-12 in each. I won’t do the math, you should get the point by now.

With regards to this and the posts before me, a young athlete who has enough drive to excel in a sport, like running, with limited facility deserve some kind of reward. In this case it is giving them the chance to compete in summer games. So don’t make a mistake here… Put up the track and do the province a favor!

JUST BECAUSE CORNER BROOK ISN’T A TRACK & FEILD CITYDOESN’T MEAN THEY CAN’T HAVE TRACK & FEILD . THE SUMMER GAMES ARE FOR ALL OF NL& LAB. CHILDREN NOT JUST CORNER BROOK. THERE ARE 100′S OF ATHLETICS WHO WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED IF THIS HAPPENS.TO CORNER BROOK IS LOOKING OUT TO THERE OWN PEOPLE AND NOT ALL OF THE PROVINCE.
    THANK-YOU
